Garden Valley School Division has finalized and presented its Major Objectives for 2016-2017. The Major Objectives for 2016-2017 are a part of the division's overall 2015-2019 Strategic Plan, which is reviewed annually by the Board and the senior and school administrators.
The Objectives for next year include a broadening of the Literacy initiative up to Grade 12, the introduction (Phase 1) of a K-8 Numeracy initiative, and the building of Professional Learning Communities (PLC's). The 2016-2017 Plan will focus on the following five major objectives:
1. Literacy K-4
By June 2017, K-4 students will increase reading levels, 85% at or above grade level.
2. Literacy Gr. 5-8
By June 2017, develop clear criteria of student learning expectations with exemplars in reading comprehension, expository writing, and critical thinking to align with the Grade 8 provincial assessment standards.
3. Literacy Gr. 9-12
By June 2017, develop a divisional Grades 8 – 12 transition protocol for the sharing of student information and, develop and implement a focused professional development plan that provides educational staff with literacy strategies and resources.
4. Numeracy K-8 Phase 1 of 3
By June 2017, develop a continuum of K-2 math learning to ensure vertical alignment and consistent student learning expectations across GVSD.
5. Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s)
Learning Teams will meet at scheduled times to discuss identified goals, essential learnings, assessments, data, and adjusted instruction to meet student learning needs.
