On January 5, 2016, the Minister of Education announced an increase of 2.55% or $32.5M in provincial funding for public Education in the 2016/17 school year.
The Board appreciates the announcement and applauds the Provincial Government for continuing its commitment to fund public education.
New funding from the province for Garden Valley is estimated at approximately $100,000 or 0.4%. Although the increase will not have a significant impact on Garden Valley School Division, the additional funding will be used to support the targeted areas including students with special needs and improving student Literacy and Numeracy skills.
The Province currently supports about 68% of the operating costs of the School Division. The remaining 32% is provided by the local property tax payer.
The Board has scheduled a Public Budget Consultation/Information meeting starting at 7:00 pm Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Parkland School in Winkler. The general public is invited to connect with the School Board in a budget information session.
The Board will approve the 2016 Special Levy at its meeting on March 8 and submit the approved 2016/2017 School Division budget by March 31, 2016.
The 20K3 Class Size Initiative funding was not included in this announcement and will be announced by government at a later time.
