It is with pleasure that we announce that Moyra Vallelly, Principal of Southwoood Elementary School, has been selected as a recipient of the 2013-2014 Celebration of Excellence in Teaching awards.
Manitoba's Celebration of Excellence in Teaching – Minister's Awards honour creative, innovative and effective teaching practices in four different categories. Mrs. Vallelly has received the award for Teaching Excellence in the category of Outstanding School Leader. Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum announced the recipients at a special awards ceremony at the Legislative Building on April 10, 2014. "The recipients of these awards are passionate about learning and I'm pleased to recognize their commitment to their students, schools and profession," said Minister Allum. "They exemplify outstanding teaching and professionalism within and outside the classroom, and are well-deserving of this honour."
"Teachers have dedicated their lives to educating and inspiring students," said Minister Allum. "It's important to recognize the work they do and show appreciation for those who prepare our young people to achieve great things in life." Each recipient will receive a certificate of recognition and a $500 cash award. The recipients' schools will also receive $500 for projects or equipment.
Principal Vallelly is a natural leader whose passion is infectious. When Southwood Elementary School was designated as a kindergarten to Grade 3 school, her vision was to create a new culture, new teams and a new school identity. Her priorities included redesigning school spaces to be student friendly, team building and staff training. She fostered an atmosphere of collaboration and trust by sharing responsibilities with staff, being visible throughout the school, setting a time for celebration and maintaining a positive attitude. She inspires her team by envisioning, researching and adapting new strategies such as a team-teaching model centred on reading and math recovery. Her enthusiastic and visionary leadership has brought about dramatic academic gains, a cohesive and inspired team, strategic community collaboration and a new school culture. The most significant measurable outcome she has achieved is the drastic jump in student literacy rate.
We would like to congratulate Mrs. Vallelly on this outstanding achievement. We would also like to thank her for her commitment to her students, staff, and school community. Her exemplary contributions to enhancing student learning and achievement are most appreciated.
