E-Bulletin: January 12, 2010


1.  Enrolment – For the first time in many years, enrolment in the division has actually dropped slightly. December enrolment of 4210 is down 20 from the September 30 enrolment of 4230.

2. 2010-11 School Year Calendar – The division is considering changes to the way parent teacher conferences are conducted.  New assessment and reporting practices will have students involved in the conference. Time during the day as well as the evening is being proposed to better accommodate parent schedules.

3. Parkland Elementary School Celebrates “Garden Project” – Staff from Parkland School explained to trustees how their “Garden Project” links student hands-on learning to the curriculum. The garden is located at the north edge of the school and boasts artifacts and plants representing geographic regions of Canada, as studied by students in the social studies curriculum.


1. Public Budget Consultations - The Board is inviting the public and the School Advisory Councils to a meeting at the Parkland School, 1100 Roblin Blvd., January 19, 7:00 pm. regarding the proposed 2010/2011 budget.


1. New High School Architects Selected – The division has engaged Prairie Architects Inc. from Winnipeg for the project.  

2. New High School Public Planning Meeting - The School Board invites the community’s participation in the planning process for its New High School, by holding Collective Design Process workshops Tuesday, January 26, 2010 and Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., at the Evangelical Mennonite Mission Church, 600 Southview Drive, Winkler.

3. New High School Name Contest – Thank you to everyone who submitted names to the ‘name the new high school contest’ which closed December 9, 2009.  The School Board will announce the new name and award the $250 prize at the January 19, 2010 Public Budget Consultation meeting held at the Parkland School beginning at 7:00 p.m.


1. GVC Zodiac Men’s Hockey Team Wins Gold at the Gonzaga Purple Puck Tournament in Washington DC

  • Congratulations to coach Brendan Neufeld, his coaching staff, the players, and parents who attended the Dec. 28-31 tournament.  
  • After overcoming many travel difficulties, the team captured gold with a 7-4 win over St. Joseph's Prep of Philadelphia.  
  • Congratulations to captain Dale Harder on being named the tournament MVP!

 2. Division Participates in Olympic Torch Run  

  • January 7, 2010 was a once in a lifetime opportunity having many students see the Olympic Flame and attend the ceremonies at the Winkler Recreation Complex.   
  • Congratulations to GVSD students and staff who were involved in a variety of ways.  Choirs from Winkler Elementary, Emerado, and GVC represented their schools, the division, and the community with great pride and enthusiasm.
