1. Winkler Elementary School Presentation • Principal Barbara Neufeld, along with teacher Cindy Hamilton provided an update on the Winkler Elementary School plan goals – literacy
and Professional Learning Communities. • The school is engaged in numerous strategies and activities to improve literacy among K – 4 students, some of which include: literacy blocks, guided reading, summer reading programs, and encouraging families to register their children with the Imagination Library. • Professional Learning Communities are continuing to develop common goals and common assessments, but teachers in their PLCs have also been developing strategies to support students who are not meeting or who have already met learning goals.
2. Provincial Bill 2 Update – Limiting Student Enrolment in K-3 Classes Expected by 2017 • Even with 44 portables in use, GVSD does not have enough space to reduce K-3 class sizes to 20 or less. • As a follow up to the GVSD 5-year capital plan submission requesting a new K-8 school for the City of Winkler, GVSD submitted updated student enrolment numbers to government. • The Board will invite the Minister of Education to GVSD to discuss facility needs, tour schools, and see continued growth in the City of Winkler.
3. Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Survey • The “Tell Them From Me” Survey gives students in grades 4 -12 a direct voice to express their views around their experiences in school. • The information is gathered and then made available to the school’s administration to ensure the school is offering the safest and most welcoming environment. • The survey will be administered during the month of January, with schools informing parents of the exact dates for their school.
4. 2015-2016 Budget Consultation Meeting • On Wednesday, February 25 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm the Board will be hosting a public consultation meeting regarding the 2015-2016 school division budget. • All community members are invited to Garden Valley Collegiate to experience the new cafeteria and provide budget feedback to the school board.
