The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 7:00 pm.

The tragic story of the Humboldt Broncos is a stark reminder of the importance of bus safety. On April 6, 2018, a truck failed to stop at a rural intersection and collided with a bus carrying a SJHL hockey team. I remember the day vividly as my 9-year-old son, a passionate hockey player, shared his thoughts with me.

My name is Michael Rempel. I am a devoted husband to my wife Marla and a father of two teenage children. I am a dedicated and community-oriented individual and have lived in the town of Plum Coulee for over four decades.

Hello, I’m Philipp Unruh. I am in my first term serving as a GVSD trustee. My family immigrated from Germany to Winkler in 1999. I have been a proud Winklerite ever since. I graduated from GVC in 2008 and studied 7 years at the University of Manitoba where I graduated as a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry in 2015.

The GVSD Board of Trustees would like to thank Minister Nello Altomare (Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning) for visiting Winkler Elementary School and meeting with the board on June 18.

I recall fairly vividly a faculty of education university lecture I attended many years ago. In that particular class on a warm spring day in 1996, my professor suggested that the profession of high school teacher would be obsolete in the next 10 to 15 years due to technology and the rapidly changing world of education and work.

Hi there, I’m Deana Wilson. The past 5 ½ years on the GVSD board have been an incredible journey, and it’s been a true privilege to be a part of it. My husband and I made the move to Winkler from Brandon in 2003, creating a home and raising our two sons here.

Hello! My name is Tena Lane. Like many newcomers, it was an employment opportunity that brought my family to Winkler.

The Department of Education has informed us that the Grade 12 English Language Arts Standards Test has been suspended. There will be no provincial ELA test written on Monday May 27.

GVSD wishes to congratulate Alyssa Neufeld, a grade 12 student at NPC, on receiving this year's Gordon Wiebe 'Make it a Reality' scholarship.

Ten years ago, I accepted an invitation to consider serving as a Trustee on the GVSD board; while it requires a high level of commitment, it’s a decision I have never regretted.

I am pleased to report that the sewage spill reported yesterday has been cleaned and sanitized and GVC Tec is ready for staff and students! All classes scheduled for GVC Tec for tomorrow (May 2) will go forward as normal. Special thanks to our maintenance team for a fantastic job!!

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees is pleased to announce an agreement with the division’s School Administrative Assistants and Library Assistants represented by the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) with the ratification of a new four-year contract on April 24, 2024.

Last week, our GVC TEC building experienced an unfortunate situation. There was a water main break resulting in the need to close our building for a few days. Today, as we continue in our clean up, we experienced a set-back.

Congratulations to the GVC Varsity Girls Basketball team on their provincial AAA championship win! They defeated Churchill (Quarter Finals), Elmwood (Semi Finals) and Sanford (Finals).

Students from J.R. Walkof School opened the 60th annual Manitoba School Boards Association Convention and AGM with the singing of our national anthem.

GVSD will once again support the Newcomers Employment and Education Development Services (NEEDS) program by providing raffle gifts for the NEEDS fundraiser at the annual MSBA Convention and AGM on March 21 and 22.

With about 350 teachers in GVSD, it’s normal that some retire, some move to other positions within our schools or move to other communities, and some new positions emerge as our community and schools grow. This means that annually, our principals and senior administration need to work diligently and wisely to fill all the teaching positions within GVSD.

Your volunteer work may help you earn money for your post-secondary studies. The Winkler Community Foundation (WCF) provides over $100,000 in education awards annually to students from Winkler and the surrounding area who demonstrate a commitment to community by “giving back” through volunteering, achievement in education and/or a strong capacity for leadership.

When most people hear about school board budgeting, they yawn and think, “Isn’t there something else to discuss?” But budgeting for the GVSD Board of Trustees is one of the important things that we do as trustees, and we want the public’s input.

GVSD trustees, school leaders, divisional admin and curriculum coordinators got together in Hochfeld on January 29 to review the Division’s strategic plan and review recent academic and student wellness data.

Thanks to our elected municipal officials and staff for meeting with GVSD Trustees and Senior Admin to discuss the GVSD budget process on January 10! Working with our municipal partners is critical to our success.

"It was fantastic!" said Board Chair, Leah Klassen, noting they had a great turnout. Part of that, she noted, was due to a Parent Advisory Council (PAC) orientation held prior to the consultation.

Bus Safety Week is an opportunity for students to receive school bus ridership training, a time when the Division emphasizes safety procedures with our drivers and a time to remind our school community and the general public to be particularly careful around school buses.
