The general public was invited to attend the Garden Valley School Division annual public budget consultation and information meeting. The meeting took place on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, 7:00 pm at Parkland Elementary School.
The purpose of the meeting was to consult with the community on the proposed draft budget for the 2016/2017 school year. Presentations made by Board Chair Laurie Dyck, Superintendent Vern Reimer, and Secretary-Treasurer Terry Penner outlined some of the areas the GVSD board is considering investing in for next year's operating budget.
Board Chair Laurie Dyck says that some of the budget spending will focus on improvements made at some of the older schools in the division. "We are looking at some possible renos or facelifts at a couple of schools," noted Dyck. Some of the renovation projects include a staff room at J.R. Walkof, some upgrades and painting at Winkler Elementary School, and a bit renovation work at Parkland Elementary.
Dyck says the board is also looking at supporting their strategic plan, which includes their literacy initiative, a new numeracy initiative, and the continuation of Professional Learning Communities. Strategic goal items that require additional budget dollars will be examined more closely to determine the most effective use of financial and other resources.
While still in draft form, the 2016-2017 Budget will be approved and made official by a board motion on March 8 as part of their regular monthly board meetings. The division wishes to thank the community for their input during the budget consultation process.
