New School Administrators Announced for 2019-20

newspaper principalsIn preparation for the divisional changes commencing in fall, Garden Valley School division has announced the appointment of several experienced educators to school administrative positions.

blue bulletPress Release: Winkler Elementary School

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary-Anna Aaldyk-Doerksen to the position of 25% term Vice Principal at Winkler Elementary School. This appointment will be effective from September 3, 2019 to June 30, 2020.

Mary-Anna graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1989. She currently serves the division as a Resource Teacher at Winkler Elementary School. Mary-Anna has been with Garden Valley School Division for 17 years where she has taught Grades 3, 6, 7 and 8 along with Human Ecology. Mary-Anna’s vast experience will be valued in this new appointment.

Mary-Anna’s educational philosophy belief, in part, states that “collaboration with the whole team is important. Teachers, parents, students, and support personnel all help to ensure that the best opportunities are provided for all students”. She goes on to say “relationships with all students is KEY. Look them in the eyes. Say their name. Show that you value them and their opinions”.

Mary-Anna and her family currently reside in Winkler. Mary-Anna is married to Garth Doerksen and together they are entering the next stage of life as their last child graduates from high school and all three children are on to exploring new adventures. Mary-Anna is looking forward to supporting and serving the WES community.

blue bulletPress Release: Parkland Elementary School Vice Principal

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the appointment of Esther Zacharias to the position of 25% permanent Vice Principal / 75% Resource Teacher at Parkland Elementary School. This appointment will be effective September 3, 2019.

Esther graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1984. She currently serves the division as a Resource Teacher at Parkland Elementary School. Esther has been with Garden Valley School Division for 16 years where she has taught everything from Kindergarten to Grade 7.

Esther’s educational philosophy belief, in part, states that “all students come to school with a unique blend of culture, experiences, and knowledges. We are responsible for creating a safe space where each person is valued and respected. The education of children is our responsibility as a community and a team: which includes all school staff, parents and other community members. Each one influences the culture of learning within the school. As we work together, encouraging and supporting each other, we create positive learning environments for our students”.

Esther currently lives in Reinland. She looks forward to building new relationships and is excited about serving the Parkland community in this new capacity.

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the appointment of Jason Shepherd to the position of 100% permanent School Principal at Parkland Elementary School. This appointment will be effective September 3, 2019.

Jason graduated with a Bachelors of Education Degree in 2003 and completed his Master’s Degree in Guidance / Counselling from Brandon University in 2015. He currently serves the division as the Vice Principal/Guidance Teacher at Parkland Elementary School. Jason has served as a Classroom Teacher, Resource Teacher, and Guidance Counsellor during his 15 years with Garden Valley School Division.

Jason’s educational philosophy belief, in part, states that “education respects and nurtures the power of learners and allows them to see the world as it could be, rather than how it is. Through relationships based on hope and respect, learners can pursue their own curiosities and answers”.

Jason and his spouse, Michelle, reside in Winkler with their two children, Ryanne and Colby.

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ashly Dyck to the position of 75% permanent Vice Principal / 25% Teacher at Pine Ridge Elementary School. This appointment will be effective September 3, 2019.

Ashly graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1997 and is currently completing her Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education. She currently serves the division as a Kindergarten/Resource Teacher at J.R Walkof School. Ashly has been with Garden Valley School Division for 16 years where she has taught everything from Kindergarten to Grade 7.

Ashly’s educational philosophy belief, in part, states that “we are all learners, and we each influence the culture of teaching and learning in our school community. I believe in practicing what I preach therefore, whether I am working with students or adults, in early years or middle years; or working with adults, as a teacher, support or supervisor, I strive to build community and work collaboratively with others”.

Ashly lives in Winkler with her husband and three kids. She enjoys cheering her kids on, crocheting, running, and spending time with friends.

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the appointment of Carrie Friesen to the position of 100% permanent Principal at Garden Valley Collegiate. This appointment will be effective the 2019-2020 school year.

Carrie has served GVSD for 13 years, with eight of those years working in Resource & Guidance. For the past 5 years, she has served as the Vice Principal of Garden Valley Collegiate and most recently the Principal of Parkland Elementary School. Carrie brings a wealth of experience through many different roles from grades K-12. She has her Level 1 & Level 2 Administration Certificate, a Special Education Certificate, two post baccalaureate degrees with a focus in special education and guidance counseling/administration. In addition, she also holds a Master’s Degree in Inclusive Education/Administration.

Carrie and her family have lived in Winkler for 13 years and loves being a part of this community. She is looking forward to developing relationships and serving the Garden Valley Collegiate community in fall.

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the appointment of Donovan Giesbrecht to the position of 100% permanent Principal at the Border Valley School Unit. This appointment will be effective September 3, 2019.

Donovan graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 2007 and completed his Master’s Degree in Philosophy from the University of Ottawa in 2015. The bulk of Donovan’s experience has been as a Grades 9-12 classroom teacher at Garden Valley Collegiate. In February 2019, Donovan was appointed to the 100% term principal position at Border Valley School. Throughout his career, he has taught English, Social Studies, Math, Mennonite Studies, and Guidance/Resource.

Donovan’s educational philosophy belief, in part, states that “schools need to foster a culture of care and trust between staff, students and parents. This begins with relationships – with good listening, respect and honesty”. He goes on to state “the best leaders and teachers have a servant’s heart. They put the needs of others before their own. They lead by listening, asking good questions, and by encouraging those around them to reach their full potential”.

Donovan and his spouse, Jennifer, reside south of Morden with their 3 children.

The Garden Valley School Division Board of Trustees, is pleased to announce the appointment of Anny Froese to the position of 50% permanent Vice Principal / 50% Classroom Teacher at Prairie Dale School. This appointment will be effective September 3, 2019.

Anny graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 2006 and is currently completing her Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education, with a pending graduation date of October 2019. She currently serves the division as a Resource/Classroom Teacher at Prairie Dale School. Anny has been with Garden Valley School Division for 13 years where she has mainly taught in Grades 4 - 8. She has also served the division as an acting principal since 2016.

Anny’s educational philosophy belief, in part, states that “education should be a positive and nurturing experience, which is to be accessible for all students, in a safe environment. As a teacher, it is up to me to foster academic and social growth and provide a supportive environment in my classroom”.

Anny lives in Altona with her husband, two children, and two dogs. She enjoys reading, trivia, and playing board games. She really appreciates coffee and the opportunity to enjoy it with family and friends.
