Att: Parents/Guardians/Students/Staff of Garden Valley School Division
On Monday, June 22, 2020 the province of Manitoba announced that the 2020-2021 school year will begin on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 for staff only, with students returning on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.
At this point in time, Manitoba is planning the return to in-class learning in September for all students while continuing to follow public health advice. However, the province has also indicated that these plans may change prior to the start of the school year depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop over the summer months. The province will confirm any changes for the fall on or before Aug. 1, taking into account the public health situation at the time.
In keeping with the announcement, GVSD schools will follow the schedule below:
Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020 – Staff Only
Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020 – Staff Only
Friday, Sept. 4, 2020 – Staff Only
Monday, Sept. 7 – No Classes – Labour Day Holiday
Tuesday, Sept. 8 – Classes start for Students K-8; High Schools – Gr. 9 students only
Wednesday, Sept. 9 – Grade 10-12 students return.
As a result of the earlier start to the school year, there are also some other minor changes to the school year calendar. Schools will be providing an updated calendar in the coming days.
All schools will continue to follow the recommendations of the Chief Public Health Officer:
• any staff or students who are ill, who are exhibiting symptoms of illness, or who have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 are to stay home;
• thorough handwashing protocols will be in place;
• sharing of items will be avoided to the greatest extent possible; and
• enhanced cleaning protocols will continue throughout the school.
We encourage parents/guardians, students and staff to check the GVSD website at www.gvsd.ca for any updates or changes in these plans as a result of provincial announcements prior to the start of the school year. We will make every reasonable attempt to inform our learning community of any changes as soon as possible. We also remind parents and staff to stay informed of any changes to travel advisories that may occur over the summer months.
We recognize this continues to be a time of challenge and uncertainty, and we encourage families, students and staff to take this much needed time for rest, relaxation, and recharging and we wish everyone a safe and relaxing summer.
