
• Principal Garth Doerksen and Vice Principal Jacqui Kusnick presented on Emerado Centennial School’s transition plan as they prepare to become a Gr. 4-8 school.
• Emerado focuses on developing well-rounded students through academics, critical thinking, problem solving, personal values, citizenship, global awareness and global responsibility.
2. Numeracy Information for Parents
• A new section has been added to the GVSD website entitled “Numeracy”. This section provides parents and guardians with suggestions on how to use numeracy (math) at home on a daily basis. Included in the numeracy section are tips and videos for parents/guardians, articles that offer valuable expert information, book ideas, as well as links to online resources.
3. Early Years Literacy Results – May 2019
• GVSD goal is for 85% of K-4 students reading at or above grade level.
• Fountas and Pinnell assessment results for May 2019 for Kindergarten to Gr. 4 students indicate that overall, 78% of students are reading at or above grade level.
Kindergarten = 75% Gr. 1 = 73% Gr. 2 = 81% Gr. 3 = 76% Gr. 4 = 80%
4. Middle Years Assessment Results 2018-2019
• 2018-2019 results indicate that GVSD students are performing above the provincial average in the percentage of students meeting grade level expectations in all areas of Gr. 7 Math, Gr. 7 Student Engagement and Gr. 8 Reading Comprehension and Expository Writing.
• Grade 7 Math - Above the provincial average in all 5 categories.
o Area of greatest strength = ordering decimals (77.5%).
o Area of greatest challenge = mental math (57.2%).
• Gr. 7 Student Engagement - Above the provincial average in 3 categories.
o Area of greatest strength = accepting responsibility for assignments (69.4%).
o Area of greatest challenge = engaging in self-assessment (51.2%).
• Gr. 8 English Language Arts - Above the provincial average in all 6 categories.
o Area of greatest strength = organizes ideas to support the reader’s understanding (75.4%).
o Area of greatest challenge = uses conventions and resources to edit to make meaning (63.3%).
• Assessment data is reviewed by schools and teachers in their Professional Learning Communities with the goal to improve student achievement.
