February is I Love to Read month and Winkler Elementary School’s theme for this year is Reading, Reading, Everywhere! To engage students in reading every day, the school has come up with daily activities and challenges to make reading fun, whether it’s at school with friends or at home with their families.
One of the daily activities at school is Stop, Drop and Read. For this, a certain song is played over the intercom after which everyone in the school building stops what they are doing, stays right where they are and grabs anything to read and just reads, reads, reads until the next bell goes.
To make things even more interesting, WES principal Barb Neufeld has initiated a principal’s challenge. Every day she challenges students to read more than she does and whoever does is entered for a chance to win books, an iPad mini or a kobo e-reader. The students come to school with motivation and excitement.
