Construction Projects
As a rapidly growing school division, GVSD generally has division-funded construction or renovation projects in the works each school year. These are construction projects that are supported by the GVSD board and funded by board initiatives.
There have also been numerous capital projects in recent years, funded by the Public Schools Finance Board (PSFB). Capital projects may include upgrades to current facilities, as well as the construction of new schools. For example, the construction and completion of Prairie Dale School (middle school) in Schanzenfeld, and Northlands Parkway Collegiate (high school) in Winkler reflects the essential need for educational space in our growing communites.
In a news release on June 16, 2017, the Manitoba Government announced the process to build a new K-8 school in Winkler. See below for an overview of the newest school to be built in Winkler.
The new school, now officially named Pine Ridge Elementary School, will be built for 675 students, with the capacity to expand to serve 875 students with the future construction of an eight-classroom addition. The new 84,000 sq.ft. elementary school will have kindergarten classrooms, regular classrooms, science labs and an art room, in addition to other specialized spaces such as a large library, computer room, resource teaching space, life-skills suite, multipurpose room, band room, home economics and industrial arts areas, and a large gymnasium. The new school will feature an integrated child-care centre that will accommodate 20 infants and 54 preschool children. It will also feature a large space to be used for nursery and before and after-school programming. The schools will be designed to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver rating. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2018 and students in the classroom in September 2019.
