On Wednesday, April 3, 2019, a fire broke out on the west wing portion of the roof of Pine Ridge School while construction work was in progress. There were no injuries in this fire and everyone on site was safe. As safey is our number one priority, GVSD is grateful for the Winkler Fire Department, Winkler Police Service and EMS for their quick response.
Following information gathering by GVSD staff on the extent of the damage, on April 5, GVSD Superintendent Todd Monster provided the local media with an update. Preliminary information indicates that the fire was contained to the west wing, second-floor roof. There was no damage to any of the structural roof components or the mechanical and electrical systems. There was also very little water damage in the interior.
W.B.S. Construction, the project's contractor, is proceeding with the clean-up from the fire and will work with the roofing company to get a new roof installed on the west wing of the building. The finishing work will continue on the inside of the building. The good news for the division and the community is that W.B.S. Construction feels confident and remains committed to a September opening for Pine Ridge School. The new 84,000 sq.ft. K-8 school, built initially for 675 students, is scheduled to be open for students at the start of September 2019.
