Online Safety

We are excited to be hosting Val Caldwell for presentations from October 29 – November 1.

Val has 17 years of experience as a dynamic public speaker. She delivers high-energy presentations that are informative, inspirational, and engaging. She has spoken to thousands of students across Manitoba and Saskatchewan along with countless parents/caregivers and professionals.

The ‘Bridging the Gap’ presentation will include:

  • A focus on mental health and the potential effects technology and social media have on overall health and wellbeing.
  • A focus on online presence/digital footprint and the affect it may have on the future.
  • Discussion about privacy settings and ensuring accounts are set up properly to avoid
  • mistakes that could affect opportunities at school or work.
  • Potential dangers on social media and gaming sites.
  • Discussion on the definitions of consent and coercion.
  • The laws surrounding sexting (images) and how sextortion works.
  • Discussion on how to handle difficult situations that arise online.

*We believe that these are important topics to explore with our students. Understanding the risks of being online and learning the tools to navigate situations will help keep them safe and will be a benefit to their mental health.

There will also be a presentation for GVSD Parents/Caregivers on Wednesday, October 30, at 7:00 pm at Garden Valley Collegiate (snacks provided).

This adult only presentation is different than the student presentations and will provide participants with an overview of some of the most common concerns facing youth today in terms of their usage of technology and social media (focus on sexual exploitation and what people are accessing through social media).
